Yes, with right understanding, you'll never have to be afraid of Death. Death is just a process, the
universal truth, no one can avoid it.
However, because our society so "afraid" of Death, that no one likes to mention about it, and everyone is sad when it comes to death.
But when we're born we're destined to death. Why so happy during birth and so sad after death, why we only see half side of it and not the whole process, can't we be happy either way birth or death?
I guess with right understanding, and true understanding and true discover and real study into one matter such as death.... once we fully understand it, we will no longer be afraid of it and not afraid of saying it.
So, what's death?? According to buddhist saying, death is just like changing your old clothing. When the clothing is old, you'll have to change it.
I still remember I watched "THE LITTLE BUDDHA", I particularly remember one snapshot when the Lama explains about reincarnation. He explains it like this: He first starts with a cup of water, he says the water is like our consciousness, the cup is our body, when you break the cup, the water flows out and if it flows out on the table and if the water is absorbed by a piece of cloth, the consciousness will still be the same, only the body is different. Interesting isn't it??
Today, my friend yuri and I talk about this topic, she suddenly mentioned another enlightening question, She was relating about "why death is so painful at the very end"??
She was relating how she understands it now after reading one of the buddhist text and was sharing it with me. She says "there's pain, that's because our body is changing state, the atoms of molecules of our body is splitting apart, and as you can imagine when the body is changing state from one to the other, of course will experience something very different inside our body".
I guess the greatest lesson we learn in life is not to learn how to earn big $$$...we can't have it at the end anyways and soon have to let go.
I think the greatest lesson and most precious lesson we've to teach ourselves is how to live happily and complete this life happily...so WE KNOW HOW TO LIVE AND HOW TO DIE naturally. IS all NATURAL PROCESS, WE DON"T HAVE TO BE AFRAID OF IT!! WE JUST HAVE TO UNDERSTANDS IT, it comes only naturally.
Now we see how "right understanding" helps us to perceive our life and help us attain true happiness. But most importantly, find "YOUR OWN MISSION" in this lifetime. I believe everyone has a mission and a reason to be born in this life time, at this time, in this world. As for me, my most basic mission is to give peace and happiness to the people around me whom I encouter, to help them find peace and happiness within themselves, and to find the greatest treasure "compassion" in them. Once the torch of compassion is ignite, it will never stops, the circle of compassion will just gets bigger and bigger as it is like the ripples of water spreading outward, limitlessly throughout the whole universe, from the earth....and beyond earth...beyond universe.
Cultivation comes into handy during the last moment of death to remain "not afraid", "calm" and "peaceful" with right understanding, right livelihood and right action. Rigth action such as doing
good deeds is tremendously important, because is supporting factor for "feeling good" about yourself, is an important contributing factor. But actually doing good deed (i.e
giving) is not just doing for the benefit of ourselves, the intention is for others.
In today's trend, we sometimes hear conversation and emphasis about religion, and how important that you either believe in only one god or buddha..etc...
For myself, I think "RELIGON" is just a name that people use. Some people believe in God and promising a chance to go to heaven and not hell, some will believe in buddhism but not really truly understanding the real teaching, etc..so on and so forth....
Is actually very sad to see all these debates...there's never an end to it...who's right and wrong...isn't that important.....before you find the truth...we probably died already. There's a very good example in the buddhist text, when we have a poison arrow in the body, we know that we're dying, there's no use when we ask where's the arrow is from, before we find the answer, we probably dead due to the poison, isn't it better to pull out the poison arrow first?? So I guess no point arguing......just put compassion into action, notice all religion teaches compassion, we surely wouldn't go wrong.
Surely we're loaded with lots of information, which one is useful and which one is true, we really have to evaluate it and self reflect to understand its relevance.
Is important that we see the whole picture and not just one perspective of one thing. I think some important rules to follow is that "DON't DO LIPS SERVICE", ask our heart...we truly believe??? what's the reason of believing? is it blind faith? or are we just believe something because we're "afraid" and simply grab one for salvation.
Sometimes we really don't have to see heaven and hell at "death", we already see heaven when we're happy in peaceful state, and we are in hell when we're suffering, ie...when we're in "anger" state, having an argument, people fighting hurting each other, war, seeing torturing of animals during slaughter, I think that's hell to me.
I think heaven and hell is a state of mind that we've created ourselves. When we're very "afraid", that's also a state of hell, cause you're tormenting your mental state.
So is important to truly understand yourself, understand how your mind works, when you master how your mind and consciousness works, you're able to handle yourself cause you know how to handle the mind. You'll surely gain true happiness, cause you're as clear as the water when you look in the water for a reflection. The more stable and calm your mind is, the reflection from the water is very clear.
To gain happiness, you've to work towards it, is like building a house layer by layer, first you need to have your basic, to cultivate fillial piety, compassion to yourself and compassion to all being, including animals, not to kill (i.e best to become a vegetarian), then further, make great vow to help people who's suffering, your compassion and wisdom seed will grow like a tree, if you give it the right condition, with patience and time, you'll see your seed of compassion and wisdom grow day by day, and your seeds of happiness will grow. Is true!
We encouter many good and bad events in our lives, please don't be unhappy or angry or frustrated by it...is all conditions and karma, the only way we can make ourselves happy is seeing the "turning point".
WE'LL ONLY SEE THE WHOLE EVENTS or TRUTH CLEARLY by SEEING THE EVENTS IN THE LOOP "FROM OUTSIDE OF THE LOOP".
The only way to change our karma is start planting good seeds in our heart, mind and put kindness or compassion into action with our hands and legs. Meet our vision by seeing further, open our eyes....go beyond the small little "ME" and "I".
looking at things, when your attitude is different, your results will be all different. Give it your best, is all a test, is a chance to improve and a learning opportunity, is like polishing sharp edges....the more you polish...it wouldn't be sharp and harmful to yourself and others.
BE OUT OF THE CIRCLE, SEE THINGS FROM MANY DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE OR ANGLE, YOU KNOW YOU'VE A CHOICE IN LIFE, use it to make great and meaningful decisions.
ENLIGHTENMENT IS A GREAT ROUTE,
May we all see it...........and may we all find our true self.....through compassion to ourselves and others
and able to see the truth for once truly and clearly for ourselves in this very life time.
With great metta,
mei chin.
